The Joint Municipal/Regional Waste Management Committee advises and assists the Region with respect to the minimization of waste going to the landfill site through such activities as reduction, reuse and recycling (3Rs) of solid waste generated in Halton.

Specific activities include:

• Advising and assisting Regional Council and the Councils of the Region’s four Local Municipalities on activities and programs that should be implemented to promote the reduction, reuse and recycling of solid waste, together with plans and programs for the disposal of wastes remaining after such 3Rs initiatives.
• Examining issues and new ideas which may affect the abilities of the Region and Local Municipalities to reach their 3Rs objectives and advising Regional Council and appropriate Local Municipal Councils on such matters.
• Monitoring the success of 3R programs, once established, in reaching the reduction, recycling and reuse of solid waste goals approved by Regional Council and the Councils of the Region’s four Local Municipalities.
• Submitting an annual report to Regional Council on the work of the Joint Municipal/Regional Waste Management Committee in achieving its objective to divert waste from the landfill site through reduction, recycling and reuse of waste, on any new initiatives proposed and on the total waste diversion for the Region.

Composition

The Committee shall be comprised of 14 members, consisting of:

• 1 member of Regional Council
• 4 elected Councillors, being from each Local Municipality, and being either a Local or Regional Councillor
• 1 member of the Halton Waste Management Site Advisory Committee selected by that Committee
• 8 citizens-at-large, at least two of whom represent rural areas, appointed by Regional Council

Frequency of Meetings

• Quarterly and at any other time at the call of the Chair.
