Black History Month is a time for us to acknowledge and celebrate the culture, history, heritage, challenges and achievements of Black Canadians and communities, not only in Halton, but across Canada.

Black History Month was officially recognized (external link) by the Federal Government in 1995. The Honourable Jean Augustine (external link), the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, introduced a motion to have February recognized as Black History Month. This observance provides an opportunity for us to learn more about the achievements and contributions Black Canadians have made to the economic, social and cultural fabric of Halton and within Canadian society.

Here are some ways you can celebrate Black History Month this year:

If you are interested in learning more about local organizations and resources, the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (external link) (CCAH) provides many valuable programs and services focused on education, culture, community and harmony. They have preserved historical accounts about Halton’s Black Community, and I encourage you to connect with them to learn more about the history of Black Canadians in Halton.

At Halton Region, we are working to strengthen our commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion with important events, services and initiatives. Our diversity is a source of strength, and I encourage all of us to embrace the values we share as we celebrate diversity and community together. By working towards acceptance, inclusion and understanding, we make Halton a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.
