Provides information on the Region’s assisted and supportive housing construction projects.

About the program

Increasing access to affordable housing is a high priority for Halton’s growing community. As part of Halton’s Comprehensive Housing Strategy, Halton Region is creating new assisted and supportive housing units on lands owned by Halton Region and Halton Community Housing Corporation (HCHC). These housing projects will provide secure, affordable shelter, as well as health and wellness support services.

Location

265 Kerr Street in Oakville is located on the east side of Kerr Street and is next door to the John R. Rhodes Residence. It is near Trafalgar Park Community Centre, downtown Oakville and Lake Ontario.

Project Description

This new 4-storey building will provide 52 assisted housing rental apartments for older adults of which 22 are for supportive housing. These apartments are designated for people on the Halton Access to Community Housing (HATCH) waitlist helping address the need for more supportive housing in Halton.

This building will be managed by the Halton Community Housing Corporation and it is Halton Region’s first Passive House Certified multi-residential building, which sets a standard for energy efficient building design and the use of sustainable resources.

Features

  • 52 apartments (22 studio and 30 one-bedroom)
  • Passive House design (external link) reduces energy costs and improves comfort in the building (temperature and indoor air quality) through the use of insultation, high-performance energy efficient windows, and heating and ventilation systems that continuously pump fresh air throughout the building.
  • Community Wellness Hub on ground floor serving tenants and older adults in the neighbourhood (in partnership with the Ontario Health teams in Halton).

Additional benefits:

The Community Wellness Hub (external link) will provide services similar to what is currently offered at Wellington Terrace Supportive Housing in Burlington and John R. Rhodes Residence in Oakville which includes:

  • One-to-one support to connect you to local health and wellness services.
  • A community connector who helps coordinate your care.
  • Social events, exercise classes, and recreational activities to help you stay active and make new friends.
  • Workshops on a variety of topics including healthy living, mental health and managing medications.
  • Tablet device loans and internet access so you can keep in touch with friends and loved ones.
