Household Hazardous Waste Tips

  • Safely store all hazardous material out the reach of children and pets.
  • Do not mix materials together.
  • Empty paint cans (dry with lids removed) can go in the Blue Box.
  • Other empty containers (with no liquid or powder residue) can be disposed of with regular garbage or in the Blue Box.

Household hazardous waste can injure waste collectors and can damage the environment if disposed of improperly. Household hazardous waste must not be poured down the drain or storm sewer. Do not place household hazardous waste at the curb—it will not be collected.

Household hazardous waste is usually labelled as corrosive, explosive, poison or flammable:

Halton residents can drop-off household hazardous waste, free of charge at the Halton Waste Management Site, 5400 Regional Road 25, Milton, (view map External Link) Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

  • There is a 20 litre maximum per visit.
  • No commercial hazardous waste can be accepted.
  • Materials must remain in their original container, or in a capped container with information about the contents.
  • Containers must be securely closed with a lid. Containers are not returnable.
  • You may also bring household hazardous waste to an alternative drop-off location.

Halton residents can drop off limited quantities of household hazardous waste, free of charge at the Halton Waste Management Site. Each year the Household Hazardous Waste Depot recycles or properly disposes over 800,000 litres of household hazardous waste.

There is a 20 litre maximum per visit. No commercial hazardous waste is accepted.

Acceptable Materials (max. 20 litres per visit)

  • Acids (rust remover)
  • Aerosol cans (full or partially full)
  • Automotive Liquids (antifreeze, motor oil and filters, fuels - must leave container at Depot)
  • Batteries (household and car & single-use/disposable)
  • Bleach
  • Pressurized Cylinders less than 20 lbs(propane tanks, acetylene, carbon dioxide, expanding foam, fire extinguishers, freon, helium, oxygen)
  • Fluorescent Lights (compact bulbs & tubes - 8 max.)
  • Household Cleaners, Bleach, Pool Chemicals
  • Paints & Stains varsols & solvents (full or partially full)
  • Pesticides, Garden Chemicals, Fertilizers
  • Medications (prescription & over-the-counter)
  • Pharmaceuticals & Cosmetics (nail polish & remover, perfume, lotions, make-up, shampoo, body wash, etc.)
  • Sharps (needles, syringes, lancets (must be in labelled, sealed container)
  • Mercury Containing Devices (residential only)
  • Vegetable/Cooking oil (residential only)
